Ms. Rosanna B. Contreras, Executive Director of the SOCSKSARGEN Federation of Fishing and Allied Industries, Inc. (SFFAII), was a featured Plenary Speaker at the 74th Philippine Association for the Advancement of Science and Technology (PhilAAST) Annual Anniversary and National Convention Mindanao Forum on July 16, 2025. The forum, held in Cagayan de Oro City, focused on "Blue Economy and Food Security, Nutrition, and Industry Outlook: Moving Forward to Pagtanaw 2050". Ms. Contreras delivered her presentation via a pre-recorded video, which was played at the event.

Ms. Contreras’ presentation titled "Blue Economy and the Fisheries Trade & Industry Outlook," leveraged her extensive knowledge of the Philippine fishing industry. She underscored the Blue Economy as a pathway for sustainable, science-based, and inclusive use of marine resources, encompassing marine capture fisheries, aquaculture, seaweed production, marine biotechnology, and eco-tourism, with people at its core.

Her presentation noted that fish provides 50-60% of the country’s animal protein intake, highlighting fisheries as a critical cornerstone for public health and food security. Despite their significant contributions, fisherfolk remain among the poorest sectors. Ms. Contreras emphasized crucial initiatives like the FFSAPI-SARGEN Handline Fisheries Improvement Project (FIP), led by SFFAII member associations, which promotes sustainable practices and decent work.

The forum underscored the nation's commitment to advancing scientific and technological innovations to address critical areas like the Blue Economy and Food Security. It provided a vital platform for experts and stakeholders to collaborate on strategies aligned with the DOST's PAGTANAW 2050 Philippine Science, Technology, and Innovation Foresight, aiming for a resilient, inclusive, and sustainable future.
