On June 24, 2025, the Region 12 Technical Working Group successfully finalized its proposed revisions to DOLE Department Order No. 156-16. This crucial proposal, aimed at strengthening labor and safety standards for fisherfolk on commercial vessels, is now set for endorsement to a National Consultation in July 2025.

DOLE DO 156-16 establishes minimum working and living conditions for fisherfolk. The proposed updates seek to align these protections with current industry practices and international labor conventions, notably ILO Conventions 188 and 155.

The comprehensive review involved key stakeholders including BFAR, PFDA, LGU General Santos (through OSHCO and OSHC), and the SOCSKSARGEN Federation of Fishing and Allied Industries, Inc. (SFFAII), representing handline, ring net, and purse seine sectors.
